In almost two years, you've seen me wear my fair share of hats. Beanies, pompoms, bears and cats, I don't discriminate. Haha. Next to cardigans, hats are one of my favorite things to use as a finishing touch for an outfit. I think that there are just some outfits that wouldn't emit the same emotion or have the same level of drama if a hat were not present. To help illustrate this thought, I'd like to share some of my past styles featuring my one and only black fedora hat. It's thrifted, totally awesome and, as you will see below, wholly transformative. So grab a beverage, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. :D

Style is just one big experiment for me. It's an endless effort to discover the best possible combination of elements. Therein lies the fun! It can be frustrating, tedious and time consuming, but there's no substitute for that "Eureka!" moment when everything comes together and looks utterly unique and amazing. I'm always looking for that little something extra that leads me off the beaten path. So, you can imagine how I felt when I realized that I may not need to add another color or pattern or layer. I just needed to add one thing: a hat. It's so simple, it hurts to think about it. Haha. So, in my view, these outfits demonstrate just how easy it is to take your styles to the next level of awesomeness. ^_^

I mean, put aside the relative complexity or simplicity of the outfits above. Rather, I invite you to think about whether you would have had a different reaction to each outfit if the hat were absent. Do you think a different hat would have been better? If so, what kind? Maybe you think the addition of a hat was superfluous. Why? Just the exercise of thinking about this is enough, because I promise you, the next time you get dressed you will start to ask yourself whether something is missing and if I've done my job correctly, you'll grab some of your favorite hats and do some experimenting of your own. ;D

Lunatic Fringe

I created yet another scary, dystopian outfit. Sorry! I just felt the itch and I had to scratch. Haha.
<3 The fact that I feel so comfortable in this garb can be a bit disturbing. Hehe. This apocalyptic style felt like a second skin to me. I guess I have a really dark side. We all do, I think. However, instead of being ashamed of it or pretending that it doesn't exist, I simply choose to embrace it in an artistic fashion.

Anyway, I have to say that I love this first photo. I whipped the fringe around to create a straight jacket effect and it just looks so f*cking cool, man. Haha. I know that I scared some people on this day. I don't know if I caused anyone to like cross to the other side of the sidewalk or something, but if I did that's totally cool. I like having an entire sidewalk to myself. It's like the world is my runway. Hehe. ;D

As for the construction of my outfit, it's quite simple. I layered the ModCloth fringe cardigan from this post underneath my black poncho from this post. Beneath those bits lies a crazy t-shirt. The cool thing about the poncho is that it's long on the sides and short in the front and back, so it's a lot of fun to layer!
And of course I had a ball just flipping the fringe every which way. Haha. ^_^ Loose pieces provide opportunities for drama through simple movement! You'll see better angles of both pieces below.

So, in this series of photos you're seeing the side and back of the outfit. Hopefully this helps to further illustrate the layering I explained above. You can see the different textures in the fabrics, too. :P

These old world map leggings are totally killer and I really don't wear them as often as I should. I just find it a little difficult to match them up with other pieces in my closet. The print is so fantastic and I'd hate to overshadow that, so I try to be mindful of what I wear with the leggings. Click here to see how I last styled them. You'll notice that I used a similar subdued color scheme to allow the patterns to stand out. I'm thinking about pairing the leggings with dark green and deep blue garments. We'll see! :P

Since this outfit is on the simple side (in my warped head, mind you hehe), I added a little something extra to make it more interesting. This Threadless tee worked beautifully. The bright colors attract attention; the scene depicted is intensely emotional, disturbing and beautiful (fitting with the overall theme of the outfit); and it's just totally unexpected since it's being covered up by two other layers. I love hiding things like this and watching people's reactions when I casually reveal those hidden bits.

By the way, Threadless is having a Spring sale! You can snag tees for just $10, this week!
That's 50% off which is an awesome discount, so totally get all up on that, bros. They've got amazing designs!

I realize that this outfit exudes a "go big or go home" attitude. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's my flavor and I think it tastes great! So, you'll have to excuse me if I go back for seconds. :P
