So....it's my birthday today or whatever. Bah! >_< Last year, I wore something super colorful and quirky to celebrate. So, I decided I'd do something similar this time around. My partner knows how much I love tacos. I could eat a taco for breakfast, lunch and dinner, bro. So, he treated me to some breakfast tacos on Saturday and then we spent the day doing a bunch of other stuff and things. :3 <3
Both the gingham blouse and the high waisted polka dot skirt are vintage. Sc0re! :DDD I got the gingham blouse from a vintage shop in Austin last Summer. I think the over-sized lapels are killer and I've always wanted a top in this color/pattern scheme. I got the polka dot skirt from Storenvy. It was my first purchase from there and I'm glad I bought this baby, because it is awesome! It's got pockets, too!
When I laid out the gingham next to the polka dots on my bed, my first reaction was "No." Hehe. But when I tried on both pieces, I thought "Hmm. I might be on to something." Both garments looked odd when laid flat, but they felt right once I had them on. I find that quite strange. Heh. Anyway, I imagine people will either love me or hate me with this one. I heartily accept the consequences. ^_^
I really love my new gilled white flats. I mean, I probably love looking at them more than I like actually wearing them. Haha. They're the only white shoes I own and honestly, I'm still trying to get used to seeing myself in white shoes. I felt goofy, but black shoes would have been a cop out and brown shoes would have played it safe, too. I don't have a wide range of colors in my shoe closet. So, I did the best with what I had. I'm so afraid of getting these shoes dirty. Haha. I'll try to wear them often, though.
I know this particular mix of patterns is kind of out there, but I'm happy with it. I believe fashion is about risks and challenges. Without those two things, there is no excitement for me. If style is art (and I believe that it is) then I want to be creative and push boundaries. The worst thing that I could ever do is play it safe. I have a pretty high standard in that regard. What's the point of doing something that you already know, something that has already been tried and tested on the runway or in magazines?
In other words, I think it is very safe to just go with what is trendy. It's like singing a cover song by a great band. You're just showcasing someone else's genius. Come up with something original. It's tougher and scarier, but man when it works out it's the most amazing feeling. It's that feeling which drives me. Once you've had that incredible moment, you can never go back to doing safe outfits.
All I can think about is how I can test the boundaries. I'd rather try to do something new and fail, than do something tried and true and succeed. If it turns out that I failed today, then I'll learn from the failure and move on. However, I will never regret that I tried to lead instead of follow. You know what I mean?
