How The @#%! Did She Do That? - Tutorial #3

A few weeks ago, I wore this layered up ensemble. Lots of attention to detail and care went into this outfit. So, I thought I'd let you know step-by-step how I put it all together. You guys, ready? :D

Picture

STEP 1: OK. So, I rolled two steps into one here, but I mean who wants to see just a lace bodysuit on a mannequin? Haha. As you can see, I wore the bodysuit underneath my thrifted white dress. That asymmetrical overlay is fantastic and the main reason why I bought the dress in the first place. ^_^

Picture

STEP 2: So, as things stand, what I've got is...not that impressive. Hehe. So, I added a black pleated high low skirt. Now, things are starting to look up! :D I probably could have gotten away with stopping there, but I felt like I could be even more creative. I wanted to add a little more texture and contrast.

Picture

STEP 3: So, I pulled my thrifted buttoned shrug over the entire outfit and voila! F*cking radtastic. :D Now, I've got rippled fabric on one side, contrasting smooth fabric on the other side, sheer lace peeking through at the wrists and chunky knit fabric on top. The view from all sides looked pretty rad, too!

Picture

How my outfit looks from every angle is of utmost importance, especially when I do super layered up looks like this one. For me, it's just a part of the "art show," so to speak. I want on-lookers to get different feelings depending on their viewpoint. Here you can see how the outfit looks from the back.

Picture

STEP 4: I put on a
double breasted black coat, because it was pretty chilly. :D And that's basically it!

Picture

I carried all of my loot in this silver studded backpack. I had other black bags I could have used, but this one held the most stuff and it added some edginess to the look. I finished everything off with faux leather zipper leggings, bright blue tights underneath and reflective sunglasses for pops of color.

Picture

I've noticed that my layered up looks tend to be dark monochrome. Heh. I'm going to see what I can do to change that. Obviously, I wanted these looks to have a darkness to them. It's hard to be mysterious in bright colors. >_< I'll see what I can do about creating more colorful, layered up outfits. :D

Questions and comments are welcome! I hope you found this useful! <3

I love this tutorial. It makes me wish I have more stuff of varying lengths to layer with. I like to see how people come up with the layers they choose. Lately, I've been loving long menswear shirts poking out at the bottom of layers. I can't wait to see more of your genius layering!

Ahh, yes. I love that type of layering, too! I can't seem to pull it off, for some reason. Haha. You'd think I'd be able to, but I dunno. I always have to try to make things "my own." So, that's where the difficulties lie. I'm also obsessed with how to perfectly layer a sweater over a dress. I've seen it done so many times and really loved those looks. :P

Oh, right on :D That makes me so glad, because I always wonder whether these will be useful or just basically get glossed over because hardly anyone would want to re-create the looks. I realized, though, that there is still inspiration to be found in these tutorials. While some people may not want to create the exact outfit, they may be able to use parts of what I did to create their own unique looks that suit their personal comfort level and style. Hearing feedback like this, though, helps to encourage me to do these more often, so I will! Thank you! <3

YESSS! This is one of my fave looks you've done recently (haha! As though I could pick a fave!). :D Thanks for the how-to! I think I need some longer length pieces to help with my layering. I still think I'm too attracted to "statement pieces" and "basics" - I need layering pieces and I need them stat! ;)

You're so kind <3 Thank you! ^_^ Yeah, dude. All you need is just some pieces with a little variation in length and texture and you're ready to get started. Once you get the hang of it, it's easy to create complex looks with some very simple elements. <3

GENIUS! I love layering a lot, but I have trouble not getting too warm especially during the winter when you're in and out of locations. Ugh. Love how you did this outfit though. One of the best.

I have been crushing so hard on this look. If only I live in a cold climate like yours, where I can layer like these. So darn create and chic. The buttoned shrug and legging are my favorite out of this bunch.
