I made someone jump when I walked around the corner wearing this. Hahaha. Ahhh, yes. <3 Well, I wanted to look like I had just stepped out of a portal from the future. I dunno. I think I succeeded. At the very least, I figured out how to look like a female Michael Jackson. Haha. It's the micro curls, I think. ;D
Anyway, I'm wearing quite a few layers which produce a bit of a kaleidoscopic effect, in that the outfit changes depending on your view of it. With the coat buttoned up, you get a hint of what appears to be a textured scarf, but it's actually my buttoned shrug. At the bottom you get a wisp of white...is it a skirt? An asymmetrical top? Hmm. ;D Then there's a long black strip of fabric in the back. A skirt maybe?
When I open up the coat, some of the mysteries are revealed. You see the buttoned shrug, but it still looks like more of a fancy circle scarf. The pleated high low skirt is more apparent, but it's not quite clear what the white fabric is. Some people might just conclude that it's part of a top, but it's actually a dress! ;P I plan on doing a step-by-step tutorial for this outfit, so everything I did here will make sense.
I should mention that I did a style advice post about how to create your own post-apocalyptic/futuristic outfits while staying true to your personal style. I used the techniques I mentioned in that post (i.e. layers, textures and asymmetry) in creating this piece. You can read that post here, if you like!
OK, so now you can see that the "scarf" is in fact a buttoned cowl shrug and you can also see bits of lace on my arms from the bodysuit I wore underneath. There are lots and lots of textures here! ^_^
With these photos, you can see better views of the back and both sides of the outfit. Each angle shows something different. Oh and this is a remixed outfit! :D I've worn each of these pieces before, except the yellow sunglasses and the blue tights. I received the blue tights from my clothing swap group. They're supposed to be footless ankle tights, but they're too short for me. They hit me at my upper calf. Haha. I still managed to find a use for them. I love the color! I got the sunglasses as part of an Instagram Style Contest that I won back in October. I knew that they would be perfectly suited for this futuristic style.
For me, fashion is very much an art form. I don't always think deeply about what I put together, but now and then I try to be creative and push boundaries. So, with this style, I gave it a considerable amount of thought and care. Each garment is like a piece of a puzzle---like those puzzles that you put together and discover that they depict a beautiful landscape. In this case, I wanted the final product to look like something from the future. I pictured a woman walking out of a dark alley in Tokyo and being greeted by the hustle and bustle of people, neon lights, honking horns, the whir of gadgets. It's drizzling and she's wearing this outfit. It just totally f*cking works. I can see it all. I love to tell these stories with fashion.
