Style Break: Storytelling

Taken during my trip to Toronto a few years back.

(=‘.’=)

My main concern when I visit a style blog is what the person is wearing and how the clothes are worn. I zero in on the photos and I leave my impressions about what I've seen on the person's blog. Every now and then I'll scan the blog post for context, if I need to. This doesn't happen often though, partly because I follow so many that I don't have the time to read them all in depth. Also, as I said, I just want the facts, ma'am (i.e. what are you wearing?). Hehe. As a result, I find that my blog basically caters to readers who are like me. I keep it lean with very little filler. I don't like clutter. It's very to-the-point. And I'm not offended if someone leaves a comment about my style, but ignores the surrounding text.

Hence, I realize that I don't have much variety other than occasional sales alerts, intermittent style advice and a shameless plug here and there. Hehe. Yeah, this part of the internets is mostly about me and what I wear and I realize this can be kind of exhausting. I figured it was time to take a break from the style posts. So, I wanted to do something different and share a bit more of my personal life with you guys. I'm a visual person, so I decided to use photos. Many, but not all, are from my Instagram. ^_^

Are there any blerds (black nerds) out there? Well, this paragraph is for you! :D

In typical nerd fashion, I have a periodic table of elements shower curtain in our bathroom (which I bought for my partner as a birthday gift, but let's be real - it was for me haha) and I have an entire wall in our living room dedicated to Mega Man. It's pretty extensive and it actually wraps around a bit to an adjacent wall, but I couldn't get a decent full shot. I also put together poster boards full of stuff that I gathered from my years of travel (tickets, fliers, posters, photos, cards, etc) and made them into wall hangings. If you find yourself with a ton of stuff in scrap books, try displaying them on the wall, instead!

Picture
Apparently, I always have a chai with my brunch and then a coffee after. Why? I have no idea. Haha.

Many of you probably already gleaned this as regular readers of my blog, but I'm addicted to Sunday brunch. It started about 5 years ago when my partner and I moved into our first apartment together. I had just graduated from law school and he drove all the way from Texas (with all of this stuff) to be with me. Luckily, he already had a job lined up. I, on the other hand, was filling out job applications for hours and hours each day for weeks. It was a tough time economically. My partner worked really hard at his new job and I was so busy with job hunting that, for a time, we didn't really get to enjoy being together.

I had been living in this city for 3 years, but I didn't get to enjoy it very much while I was in law school.  My partner had visited me several times over the years, but the city was still new to him. Basically, there was a lot for us to explore and do and we just weren't doing anything. One Sunday morning, my partner suggested that we go for brunch. I looked up some brunch places that were highly rated and that neither one of us had been to, we picked one and from that point on, it became something that we did together every week. So, even if we were too busy to enjoy each other's company in the middle of the week, there would always be this one day that was just for the two of us, if that makes any sense?

Watch yourself! Crazy cat lady coming through!

I have a cat, ya'll! :D Her name is Bonaparte and she's a Maine Coon. We rescued her in September 2013 and she has been a ray of sunshine in our home ever since. She has a furry tail; she loves to play fetch; and every morning at 6 AM she chirps and howls outside of our bedroom until one of us comes out to greet her. Haha. We tried having her sleep in the room with us, but she is prone to chewing and scratching things (including my nice clothes), so she has to sleep in her cat bed in the living room, for now. We weren't sure how old she was when we got her, but we think she's just over a year old, now.

Picture
Two peas in a pod and what not ^_^

Oh that's just me and my Player Two, Colin. :D We like nerdy Threadless tees, apparently. Haha. The  left photo is from our trip to Canada (Ottawa to be exact) and the one on the right is from Amsterdam.

Some outfits that didn't make the cut o_O

Finally, I thought it would be fun to show you guys some outfits that I've worn that didn't make it to my blog. As I've said in the past, I try to edit myself and be honest about which outfits are interesting enough to be featured. The ones you see here didn't make the cut for various reasons. I still like to keep a photographic journal of my outfits, though. I keep the photos so I can improve the outfits later. :P

(\__/)
(=‘.’=)

And that's that! If you found this post painful, you should know that I probably won't do these often. So, you can find some measure of solace in that. Haha. I will nevertheless try to do more non-outfit related posts, because I realize that seeing style posts exclusively can be pretty boring and I want my readers to have fun when they visit. So, please bear with me and thank you for your kindness as always! <3

LOVE that periodic table of elements shower curtain, gifts for others that also benefit you are the greatest lol. And I really love the outfit in the top right, with the mustard sweater that didn't make the cut!

Hey! Thanks so much! <3 Yeah, I'm a bit of a freak when it comes to cataloging things. I'm a list maker, too, so being able to keep a visual list (so to speak) of my outfits really appeals to me. It's one of the reasons why I love Pinterest. :D Thanks for stopping by, by the way! I'll check out your blog!

I use to have one periodic table in my wallet all the time. You have a great style and we love to see your outfits but now just thank you for sharing a part of your life.

It is a fun tradition! <3 At first, we couldn't really afford to go every single Sunday like we do now. We had to go sparingly, but yeah it is something I look forward to every weekend. :D

Yeah, that time that you spend together really is so important. After I got my first law job, we hardly saw each other at all. The only time we were together during the week (and able to really talk to each other) was dinner time. Even then, the only things we ended up discussing were work related. Before we knew it, it was time to go to bed and start all over again. So, the weekend was a time for us to relax and really talk to each other (i.e. not just stuff that happened at our jobs). :P

Love learning more about you, a side from your awesome fashion sense. I was a collage making machine growing up so I love your idea of turning souvenirs from events into wall art. Super cool. We have been collecting paper money and coins from other countries for years to make into double sided hanging art someday. ~ Sheena

Omgosh, yeah I have paper money and coins stored up, too! I haven't figured out how best to display them, yet. I was thinking about adding a suspended glass layer to one of our tables and slipping those things underneath. I suck at DIY, though, so.. haha. I don't know if that will happen unless my partner helps me. :P

Hey! Omg, I missed you, man! <333 I was so happy to see the barrage of comments from you the other day. Haha *^_^* I hope all is well! Oh and that upper left photo, I was on my way to get some clothing tailored. The tailor happened to be in a rather affluent part of town, so you can imagine how many people I scared that day. Haha. I should probably care about such things, but I don't. Luckily the tailor didn't seem to care. She was happy to accept my money, despite the fact that I probably looked like a crazy person. :P

It's funny, I don't really read a ton of blog posts super closely. I mean, I'll read through a bit, and slow down if the particular post catches my interest, but there's just a lot to read! I actually find that I spend more time reading your posts a lot, just because I like how you write. So uh.... keep at it!

Oh, that's so kind of you! <3 Someone else said the same thing awhile back. She said she liked my "voice," which I guess meant that she liked my writing style. I tend to write like how I talk (i.e. conversational and riddled with expletives - though I try my best to keep the latter to a minimum out of respect heh). I also tend to be verbose, so I try to stfu and keep the text lean as much as possible. I'm glad you like my ramblings, though! :DDD <3

I personally love when bloggers mix it up and have different kinds of posts along with sharing outfits. I do this on my blog, but I suppose most bloggers just care about the outfits, because my other posts don't seem to get any attention (I did one on Friday that i was really excited about, but I guess I was alone with the excitement). It really bums me out, but I try not to let it get to me. I think you should do more posts like these, because I really enjoyed reading it! (:

Reply
Anna

Right on. Yeah, I've had moments where I find certain posts aren't as heavily commented on. I try to learn from those situations and figure out what kind of content is most engaging while at the same time remembering that the blog is for myself first and foremost, and that I shouldn't simple cater to the masses. It's definitely a balancing act.

I'm always surprised when someone comments on something I wrote in my post because, like I said, I don't normally read a lot of posts in depth and I just expect people to be like me (which obviously isn't a good strategy, but I can't help it heh).

So, I've found over the last year or so that there are people who really like what I write and actually read it; people who don't care for the writing, but really like to see the outfits; people who prefer to scan my posts for info re how my outfit was constructed/where I bought certain pieces/etc; and then there are those people who don't care about the post at all and just want to get their blog post link in the comments to increase exposure (these typically get deleted).

So, I dunno. As long as you're posting about what you want to post about and YOU like the content, I suppose that's really all that should matter. Also, I think the more traffic your blog starts to generate, the more types of people your blog will attract and over time you'll start to get more interest in the posts that weren't really getting much attention before. It could be a reach issue (i.e. not enough people are seeing your posts) as opposed to an interest issue, so keep that in mind, too! <3
