Happy belated Canada Day! :D Seeing as how I'm a U.S. citizen, I might as well also wish my friends to the South a Happy Independence Day. :P I don't know how happy it can really be, at the moment. The thought of parents being separated from their children and being placed in cages kind of puts a damper on the whole 'land of the free, home of the brave' spiel. Veggie burger or potato salad, anyone?
Anyone? Bueller? Yeah. =\ I guess one way to get through it would be to just focus on the good and celebrate that, but even that doesn't feel entirely appropriate. *shrug* I don't know. At any rate, I hope it's a meaningful day marked by reflection. By the way, I'm officially a permanent resident, now. Huzzah!
I still haven't managed to identify what binds this city and so I'm still not sure of my place in it. There doesn't seem to be any camaraderie or social unity. The city feels sterile, downright cold at times. Then there's me. Bopping around town with my "Ask Me About My Cat" tee and trying to believe that I actually belong here just as much as the next guy. Heh. I can count the number of times, on one hand, when someone in my neighbourhood spoke to me. Just shooting the breeze. When it happened, I'd immediately become suspicious and make sure I had an eye and hand on my belongings. Hehe. That's how infrequent it is. I mostly get stares from passersby or full dismissal. That seems to be the norm.
My partner says it's the "British way." Haha. He says people around here prefer to hold themselves at arm's length. Look, but don't touch, or acknowledge, or engage or....anything, really. I don't know if I (want to) believe that this city is comprised of eerie, dispassionate automatons. I really was hoping someone would ask me about my cat, though. Hehe. I would have had a lot to say, let me tell you. ;)
