How The @#%! Did She Do That? - Tutorial #1

Remember this boho punk outfit from last week? A lot of thought and preparation went into making this ensemble, so I thought it would be cool to show you guys how I created it step by step! I've had some requests to do so-called layering tutorials. Hehe.
I guess this sort of counts as one. I just thought it would be helpful to bring you into my thought processes surrounding this particular outfit. ^_^

I apologize for the strange lighting. Where I live in the U.S., it gets dark at like 5 PM when Fall/Winter sets in. It sucks balls. >_< When I took these photos, it was maybe an hour before sunset. My hands were freezing and I was wearing gloves! So, I might have been hasty with the camera settings. Hehe.

Picture

STEP 1: I started with the basic grey maxi dress from Choies and an asymmetrical knot.

Picture

STEP 2: Then I had added my black cardigan. However, this time, I'm using my thrifted floral poncho as the second layer. I think it improves upon the style a bit more. I follow this with the third layer...

Picture

STEP 3: ...my thrifted fringed crochet poncho and...

Picture

STEP 4: THEN, I add the asymmetrical long sleeved cardigan. This overlapping is better, IMO.

Picture

STEP 5: Finally, I top it off with my vegan leather jacket from TIL Darling and...voila! :D

Picture

I think the other elements of the outfit are pretty self explanatory. ^_^ I'm not brave enough to do a Youtube video like some other bloggers. Sorry! I'll get there...maybe. Anyway, I hope these mannequin photos are good enough! Oh and if you'd like to see a tutorial for a specific outfit, just make a request!

Thank you for your kindness, as always! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! <3

WHOAAAAAA! Now that is layering at it best. This I'm surprised with all the added layers it does not look bulky. This is very Lawrence of Arabia chic.

THis is really neat. While I knew a lot of thought went into your outfits, I'm not sure I realized before quite how many layers went into the thing. The final product looks so different from where you start.

It's so awesome to see how you created this look, Anna! I moved to New York last year from California and I'm still getting used to having to layer, so this post came just in time! I love how chic and easy you make layering look!

GREAT POST! But that was like layering 501. Can we start with layering 101 for people like myself who really don't get it apart from make-your-dresses-more-versatile-by-wearing-a-skirt-over-top? :D Hehe.

Might I suggest a post about what basic versatile pieces that we layering apprentices should possibly invest in? I think my main problem is that I have a lot of stand alone statement pieces and a lot of basics but not much else. I'm pretty sure that I'm missing some of the essential layering building blocks and I need ideas. Thank you!

Sincerely,
Your loyal and adoring fan <---was that too much? ; )

Aww, what? I doubt you're as bad as you're making yourself out to be. Honestly, wearing one or two pieces over dresses is what I do typically. Every now and then I go off the beaten path as you see here and I add two or three more items instead. :D I'll try to do a better job of making my process more transparent. I really had no idea that I am this amazing layering person or whatever. All of this just comes naturally to me. I dunno. *shrug* <3

LOL. You've seen my blog. When do I layer anything? Yeah pretty much never. Color matching? Yes, I can do that. Layering? Not so much.

I love all the layering! but for me, after the 2nd layer, I get to the problem of "oh, I can't really fit anymore on" LOL :)

Oh, yeah, I totally get it! :D The key for me is to choose the right fabrics. Everything I'm wearing except for the jacket and thick scarf is lightweight, thin and either sheer or semi-sheer. So the entire outfit is breathable and comfortable without looking weighed down. :P

Yep! As I was telling Nout (above) it all comes down to the fabrics. In one of my previous posts, someone had commented that my outfit looked as if it wasn't appropriate for the weather, or something to that effect. I remembered thinking to myself: 'Did she see that I'm wearing a (1) sweater, (2) hoodie and ANOTHER (3) hoodie? Hahaha. My hands were the coldest since I wasn't wearing gloves and my legs were chilly, but I was fine! Totally, totally fine. Haha. <3

Also, there is a lot people don't see and that's the secret. Underneath a lot of my outfits for Fall/Winter/Spring I wear lightweight thermal tops and bottoms. ;) I try not to let the weather dictate my style. Sometimes, I don't have a choice, but I always try to stay true to my style while adapting to the temperatures.

Gosh, I seriously love peering into your mind. It's like this little box of awesome. Thanks for the speed course in layering! Maybe someday I'll be as good as you. :P

I hear you about the weather getting colder and the days getting darker. It's dark by 5:30 here, and as we approach Christmas it'll be dark closer to 3 o clock. Sigh.

love,
